Throughout America’s history, women’s voices have often been silenced, as they were forced to stay at home to tend to their husbands, children, and household chores.

Catalysts for change can be recognized in Madam C.J. Walker, an early 20th century female entrepreneur and one of the first self-made female millionaires in the United States, who faced discrimination because of her gender and skin color during the Jim Crow era. Sara Blakely, who launched Spanx at the turn of the 21st century, faced challenges such as academic setbacks, career rejections, and trying to navigate a male-dominated industry.

Countless women throughout history have been silenced, bent over a stove instead of changing the world with their ideas, all because they were born a woman.

“We the People” is an address to women as well as men, because gender equality is a fundamental principle of democracy and human rights.
