“We the People” was meant to represent all Americans, yet immigrants are often excluded from representation. Ellis Island became a symbol of hope and opportunity for millions of immigrants arriving in the United States between 1892 and 1954. For many people escaping poverty, war, or persecution, Ellis Island represented the chance for a safer life, steady work, freedom, and new opportunities for their families. This piece reminds us that the voices and experiences of immigrants should be included in the meaning of “We the People.”
